eClinicalMedicine

by Schnoz A, Jeanguenat H, Msellem AS, Mohammed IS, ∙ Abdalla RS, Seif SN, Amour AK, Khamis MJ, Mougenid FL, Volotko O, Sieradzan O, Dequatre Cheeseman K, Nyangwesoe GM, Egondi TE, Barreira F, Hübner MP, Zehetmayer S, Ali SM, Keiser J. eClinicalMedicine 2026; 101 doi:10.1016/j.eclinm.2026.104273.

Summary: Within eWHORM, a double-blind, Phase IIa, randomised, placebo-controlled trial conducted on Pemba Island, Tanzania evaluated the safety and efficacy of oxfendazole against Trichuris spp. infection. 127 adult participants received placebo, 400mg oxfendazole on day 1, 800mg oxfendazole on day 1, or 800mg oxfendazole on three consecutive days. The primary outcome, Trichuris spp. egg count at day 18, was 1099.2 (SD 3354.6) for placebo, 218.3 (SD 506.4) for 400mg oxfendazole, 148.4 (SD 244.7) for 800mg oxfendazole and 36.2 (SD 117.5) for 3×800mg oxfendazole. All doses were well tolerated and had a similar number of adverse events compared to placebo. Single doses showed no benefit over currently used drugs, however, multiple drug doses could play a role in targeted treatment schemes.
