Strengthening health systems and clinical development capacities through effective partnerships: a case study of DNDi’s collaboration with the Leishmaniasis Research and Treatment Center in Ethiopia (2003–2022)

Frontiers in Tropical Diseases

Nigusie Weldeab A, Yeshiwas F, Mulu E, Berhe R, Nigusie A, Tesema S, Stobbaerts E, Regad M, Costa Chaves G Frontiers in Tropical Diseases. 2026, 7 doi:10.3389/fitd.2026.1918144

Summary: The authors of this study analysed the trajectory of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) treatment and research activities at Leishmaniasis Research and Treatment Center (LRTC), Gondar, Ethiopia and the role of the partnership with the DNDi in strengthening research and health system capacity for VL in Ethiopia. They used a qualitative case study design, with key informant interviews and conventional content analysis. The DNDi–LRTC partnership significantly enhanced clinical research capacity, treatment outcomes, and policy uptake for VL in Ethiopia. Despite these achievements, structural and operational challenges remain. Addressing these will be essential to sustain impact and optimize future partnerships. This case study provides practical insights for designing effective and sustainable collaborations in neglected tropical disease research and health system strengthening.
