Message on the passing of Professor Sir Nicholas White from DNDi Board Chair Dr Marie-Paule Kieny and DNDi Executive Director Dr Luis Pizarro

2 Feb 2026

We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Professor Sir Nicholas White, a towering leader in medical science and global health and a cherished member of our community. Nick was a trusted advisor, generous mentor, passionate advocate for DNDi’s mission, and tireless champion of the communities we serve.

Over decades of commitment to scientific excellence, Nick advanced groundbreaking research and world-class science – for neglected diseases and for marginalized communities that benefit least from scientific progress.

From 2016 to 2025, Nick served as Chair of DNDi’s Scientific Advisory Committee, embracing the role with extraordinary dedication over a decade of tenure. He helped steer the scientific direction of our R&D portfolio, challenged us to be ambitious and rigorous, and helped ensure that the highest scientific standards remained central to our mission and day-to-day decision-making.

Nick’s scientific contributions reshaped the treatment of infectious diseases and saved countless lives. His role in the development and global adoption of artemisinin-based combination therapies for malaria transformed the treatment landscape for the disease and dramatically reduced mortality across endemic regions. His work on the clinical management of severe malaria set enduring standards that still guide practice today.

Working with Nick was a privilege. With his exceptionally sharp intellect and quick English wit, Nick challenged assumptions, advised with candour, and helped our teams to navigate difficult scientific and operational terrain. We are profoundly grateful for the wisdom, integrity, and humanity he brought to DNDi and our mission.

Nick’s legacy will endure through the patients whose lives he improved, the scientists he inspired, and the institutions he shaped to advance science driven by public health need. He will be deeply missed, but we take comfort in the certainty that Nick’s wisdom and dedication will continue to guide and inspire our work. On behalf of DNDi, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Nick’s family, friends, and colleagues around the world.
