Como acabar de vez com as doenças negligenciadas?

Dengue, Chagas, leishmaniose… As doenças tropicais negligenciadas (DTNs) afetam, anualmente, mais de 1 milhão de pessoas e fazem mais de 200 mil vítimas fatais, de acordo com a Organização Mundial da Saúde (OMS).

Elas formam um grupo de 21 enfermidades determinadas pela OMS que prevalecem principalmente em áreas de extrema pobreza. As DTNs recebem esse nome porque são ignoradas sobretudo pela indústria farmacêutica privada.

Por atingirem populações vulneráveis, não representam um mercado lucrativo e, assim, não despertam interesse de investimentos em pesquisa e desenvolvimento de novos tratamentos.

O termo “negligenciadas” não se refere apenas às doenças, mas também às pessoas que convivem com elas. Enquanto lidam com dores crônicas e outros sintomas, muitas delas ainda enfrentam o estigma social.
