Media workshops and fellowships
Bringing together reporters and researchers working on neglected diseases
Through our workshops, we aim to equip reporters with the tools, contacts, and resources they need to cover the widely overlooked issues of neglected diseases. These workshops cover both the devastating impact neglected diseases have on patients and communities, and the complex and often fascinating science behind developing new treatments.
Where can I find researchers from my country who will respond to my queries? Can I visit a clinical trial site? How can I talk to patients? How can I make scientifically detailed stories compelling for my readers? How can I explain the science behind neglected diseases?
These are some of the many questions that reporters from countries affected by neglected diseases have asked our researchers over the years. Vitally important questions that point to the many challenges faced by journalists looking to cover not only NTDs, but public health and science at large.
As the world has seen during the major global health crisis of the past decade, from Ebola to COVID-19, journalists play a crucial role by providing accurate and clear information about public health. They are often the only barrier against fake news and the misinformation that is circulating on- and off-line about health and science.
To help overcome these challenges, we have launched several media workshops and fellowships for reporters from Africa, Asia, and Latin America. These programmes include briefings on demystifying the science behind clinical trials, deep dives into specific diseases by local experts, site visits, and special sessions with seasoned science journalists.
Reporters are invited to submit an application for our media programmes when we announce them, but in the meantime please feel free to ask questions or express interest to media@dndi.org
Stay tuned for future calls for applications!
We have partnered with a range of organizations to run our media workshops: Médecins Sans Frontières South Asia; The International Congress for Tropical Medicine and Malaria (ICTMM) and Siri Raj Hospital/Mahidol University; the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (RSTMH); the World Conference of Francophone Science Journalists and the French Embassy in Nairobi.
Please reach out to us at media@dndi.org if you would like to partner.
