Des scientifiques, des médecins, des bailleurs de fonds et des décideurs politiques provenant de plus de 70 institutions dans plus de 30 pays se sont réunis pour créer une coalition internationale pour répondre à la pandémie de COVID-19 dans les zones à ressources limitées. Le but de la ‘Coalition pour la Recherche Clinique sur le COVID-19’ (‘COVID-19 Clinical Research Coalition’) est d’accélérer la recherche sur le COVID-19 qui fait cruellement défaut dans les régions où ce coronavirus pourrait causer des ravages sur des systèmes de santé déjà fragiles, et où son impact serait maximal sur les populations vulnérables.

Dans un commentaire publié aujourd’hui dans la revue The Lancet, les membres de la coalition affirment qu’il est urgent de mettre en place une collaboration et une coordination internationales pour la recherche, afin de soutenir les pays d’Afrique, d’Amérique latine, d’Europe de l’Est, ainsi que certains pays d’Asie dans une réponse efficace à une pandémie qui s’aggrave de jour en jour, et d’accélérer la recherche ciblant spécifiquement les zones à ressources limitées.

La coalition rassemble un éventail sans précédent d’experts de la santé, issus d’instituts de recherche du secteur public, de ministères de la santé, de milieux universitaires, d’organisations de recherche et développement sans but lucratif, d’ONG, d’organisations internationales et de bailleurs de fonds, tous déterminés à trouver des solutions pour lutter contre le COVID-19 dans les zones à ressources limitées.

Une réponse importante en matière de recherche sur le COVID-19 a déjà été mise en place grâce à l’étude SOLIDARITY dirigée par l’Organisation mondiale de la Santé (OMS), un effort à l’échelle mondiale sans précédent. Néanmoins, les auteurs ont constaté que sur près de 600 études cliniques enregistrées sur le COVID-19, très peu sont planifiées dans des zones à ressources limitées. Les auteurs s’engagent à partager leur expertise technique et leurs capacités de recherche clinique pour accélérer la recherche sur le COVID-19 dans ces zones.

Il est évident que ce défi d’une ampleur inégalée ne pourra être relevé par une seule organisation. La coalition facilitera une approche coordonnée, afin que toutes les données de toutes les régions soient recueillies de manière similaire, mises en commun et partagées en temps réel. Ceci permettra aux pays et à l’OMS de prendre rapidement des décisions en matière de politiques et de pratiques fondées sur des données probantes.

« Nous nous réjouissons de la création de cette coalition, qui met à profit des expertises multinationales et multidisciplinaires existantes dans la réalisation d’études cliniques dans les zones à ressources limitées, et qui assistera l’OMS dans son rôle de coordination de la réponse mondiale au COVID-19, » déclare le Dr. Soumya Swaminathan, Scientifique en chef de l’Organisation mondiale de la Santé. « Bien que l’épicentre se situe actuellement ailleurs, nous devons nous préparer dès maintenant aux conséquences de cette pandémie dans les zones à ressources plus limitées, ou nous risquons de perdre un nombre beaucoup plus important de vies. »

Les membres de la coalition réclament des engagements spécifiques afin que les zones à ressources limitées aient accès le plus tôt possible aux nouveaux traitements efficaces, et que ceux-ci soient abordables et facilement accessibles.

À ce jour, plus de 70 organisations font partie de la coalition et un appel a été lancé pour que d’autres institutions prêtes à partager leurs capacités existantes les rejoignent.
