Reinvent was an interdisciplinary conference that brought together stakeholders from all sectors to cultivate a Toronto-based forum to reinvent how we think about neglected diseases.
Free Trade at What Cost? R&D for Neglected Diseases Date: Friday, October 2, 2015 Location: George Ignatieff Theatre In the area of neglected diseases, a significant amount of public, academic, and media attention has focused on the lack of research and development for treatments and diagnostics. While such critiques are essential, the conversation is often limited to identifying new partnerships and funding mechanisms that could open up the market for new drug development and to find the most profitable ways of tackling the burden of neglected diseases. With this session, the aim was to broaden the discussion to deconstruct the rhetoric of innovation and look at overarching economic, social, and political structures that frame the global trade and intellectual property regimes. This panel included four experts with a spectrum of expertise in research and development, advocacy, and critical theory along with a moderator.
