Summary: Post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL) is thought to play a role in the recurrence of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) outbreaks, and is a priority of the South-East Asia Region Kala-azar Elimination Programme (KAEP). The authors reviewed the literature on PKDL in Asia and interpreted the findings in order to make recommendations. Knowledge gaps were identified in relation to pathophysiology, risk factors, and the role of PKDL patients in transmission. The authors concluded that early detection of those who contribute to transmission and those who are in need of treatment, and prevention of PKDL should be prioritzed by innovative and improved treatment for VL.
