In 2013, The Rockefeller Foundation asked the global community to nominate organizations and individuals who are making a difference for poor and vulnerable populations through innovation. From those nominations—and the votes of individuals around the world—the Rockefeller Foundation selected three winners of the 2013 Next Century Innovators Award. Representatives from each organization will be on hand to accept their awards.
The 2013 Next Century Innovators are:
- Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi) – Only 10% of the world’s health research budget is delegated to the diseases affecting 90% of the population. DNDi catalyzes existing networks to foster the development and distribution of new and affordable medicines, delinking the cost of R&D from the price of the final product.
- The Nature Conservancy / Water Funds – Environmental pressures, including the growth of cities, climate change, and deforestation, are putting pressure on the world’s decreasing supply of clean water. The Nature Conservancy works with partners to develop Water Funds, which imbed the cost of water conservation into local markets.
- Global Minimum / Innovate Salone – Innovate Salone is a challenge that invites the young people of Sierra Leone to create, invent and collaborate in order to build solutions to the problems they’ve identified within their communities
