Message on the passing of Dr Alwyn Mwinga from DNDi Executive Director Dr Luis Pizarro

6 Sep 2024

A message from DNDi Executive Director Dr Luis Pizarro:

We are deeply saddened by news of the death of DNDi Board Member Dr Alwyn Mwinga.

Dr Mwinga first joined DNDi’s Board in 2015, and over the last nine years served as the patient representative. It was a privilege to work alongside Dr Mwinga, and see first-hand how she brought her life-long dedication to patient rights and well-being to passionately support DNDi’s mission that no patient should be left behind.

Dr Mwinga will be remembered fondly for giving a much-needed voice to patients whose needs would otherwise have been neglected. On behalf of the whole DNDi team, I send my sincere condolences to her friends, family, and everyone who knew and worked with her.

Alwyn Mwinga

Dr Alwyn Gladwyn Zebron Mwinga was the Chief Executive Officer of the Zambia AIDS Related Tuberculosis Project (Zambart). Before joining Zambart, she worked in different capacities at CDC Zambia. She was an Expert Consultant on TB/HIV Research Priorities for the WHO in addition to serving as a member of multiple national and international boards relating to TB. She was an Associate Editor of The Lancet Infectious Diseases and the International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases and a Senior Lecturer at the University of Zambia.

In 2007, Dr Mwinga was awarded the Global Health Achievement by the Office of Global Health CDC as well as the PEPFAR Lifetime Achievement Award in 2011 in recognition of her contribution to HIV and TB.

She studied Tropical Medicine (M.Sc.) at the University of London, and she had a M.Med and MB ChB from the University of Zambia. In 2013 she completed her PG Diploma in Bioethics at the University of Stellenbosch.
