The multidimensional comprehension of Chagas disease. Contributions, approaches, challenges and opportunities from and beyond the Information, Education, and Communication field

Memorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz

by Sanmartino M, Forsyth CJ, Avaria A, Velarde-Rodriguez M, Prat JGI, Albajar-Viñas P. Memorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz 2021; 116: e200460, doi: 10.1590/0074-02760200460

Summary: Chagas is a complex, multidimensional phenomenon in which a variety of factors intersect. Understanding Chagas as primarily a biomedical issue, while ignoring or downplaying the other dimensions, has long reinforced the neglect of this disease. Although integrating these multiple dimensions into a coherent approach adapted to the field is an immense challenge, it has the potential to be more effective and sustainable. The authors provide elements for a critical, current, and contextualised understanding of Chagas that they hope will support the construction of future proposals for activism, research, health systems and public policy that seek to address and modify relations of inequality, based on a more complex and grounded understanding of people’s health globally.
